Analysis of two film magazine front covers.

As i've chosen to produce a film trailer i have to do two other peices of work to go with it. I could choose between

* A website promoting the film.
* A film magazine featuring my film on the front.
* A poster promoting my film.

From those 3 options i chose, a film magazine promoting my film and a poster promoting my film. I have decided to research both to see what i will need to include in my magazine and poster and what will look professional.

From comparing these two covers i have seen that both include a large image taking up most of the page and text to suit with the genre and style of the photos. The magazine called 'Entertainment Weekly' is a lot more symplistic then 'Empire' magazine.

Entertainment weekly doesnt display the barcode on the front and also doesn't contain much colour. Empire magazine however has bright green colours to suit with the image that the joker has. Entertainment Weekly on the other hand has bleak colours such as grey and white to suit with the genre of Sweeny Todd. This magazine cover is a lot more sombre than Empire magazine.

The close up shot of Johnny Depp on the front of Entertainment Weekly magazine is a close up shot representing the Gothic genre of the film. This photograph looks as though it has been taken from a still shot of the film were the acting is directly looking down the camera lense interacting with the audience. This shot is not necesserily representing the film but representing the actor. The fact that it invloves the audience and involves a major A list star half sells the film for the audience. Entertainment Weekly magazine knew exactly what they were doing when they advertised the shot as 'Johnny Depp' and not 'Sweeny Todd'. They know Johnny Depp is a well respected actor and that he has thousands of fans. To sell the film they do not nessicarily have to show advertise it. Many people would go see the film just because Jonny Depp is acting in it.

Empire magazine have also chosen a still from the film but we know this is not representing the actor as 'Joker' it written next to the image. The typography is an usual style which shows the villain side of the action hero comic film. Batman is a well known comic strip and has many fans. Because of this the 'Joker' is a well known villain. Thousands of people love everything to do with comics and Batman and this magazine does not have to sell the actor to make people go to watch the films. This is something the editors and producers know. Batman also has many sequels, people would have been awaiting this film as it is not a one off.

Planning.

Although my ideas are not fully formed into one whole idea yet i have a few which i will put together to create my trailer.

I've decided i don't want my trailer to be fully scripted. I feel this way it will look more professional and i will use music to cover the silences. My trailer will be based around God and religion as i find this would be a creepy element to the film. The trailer will constist of slow and fast paced camera movements and some dialouge will be added.
As the genre of the film is horror i want most of the trailer to be in the dark or rain. Red and black colour will be interpreted into the trailer as i feel these are classic horror colours.
I have a few locations in mind which i will probably use for my coursework these include, a church, a woods, a garage and a boiler room. The music i want to include in my trailer will be classical music, the sound will start of slow and soft gradually getting louder and faster. I will also use the sound of bells in my trailer as i am setting it in a church.

The casting for my trailer will be simple. I want to use one male and one female character. The male will be the dominant character in my coursework with the female being the victim. I have chose to do it this way as it shows stereotypical views of woman in society and also women in horror films.

Some parts of my trailer will be in colour, others in black and white. When it comes to the victim being attacked thats the part i want to be in black and white. The other scenes i want to be shot in the church so this is the part i want in colour as i want the outstanding effect of the colours in the church especially the reds. I will include religious symbols in my work such as the glass panes at churches, crosses and jesus. These symbols will be shown in a fast motion with a fast and loud non digectic song/sound behind it.

I've decided to do a film trailer for my coursework. The genre of this film will be horror.
I want the audience for my film to be for people aged 16 - 26 and the certificate for my film will be either 15 or 18. To prepare for making my video i have been looking at other students work and gathering a few ideas from thier work. I have also been researching the basic elements and stereotypical types of elements for horror trailers.
