Video Killed The Radio Star - The Buggles.
Click to watch ^^
This video was one of the first music videos ever made. It was produced in 1979 and sang by a band called The Buggles. This video starts with a close up of the main singer (Trevor Horn) in the band. The colouring of the video is rather grainy and not bright. The video has graphics suurounding it which at the time would of looked revolutionary as music videos were never heard of but looking at it now it looks rather cheap. Camera angles and shots are very limited on this video, they mostly consist of close ups, medium shots and zoom. We are first shown the main singer of the band (Horn), he is shown at a close up shot. He is wearing a silver suit and white sunglasses to match. The clothing shown gives off a kind of space theme, the silver and the sunglasses seem rather intertextual to what spacemen would wear. It also gives a feeling of something new and exciting. The clothes seem to be something different and this is exactly what the music video is. The fact the sound of the song is in an almost like robotic voice shows a sense of how the technology was at the time and it seems as if they are showing off how new they are.
The camera then cuts to two women singing and a man (Geoff Downes) playing piano. This shows the audience that the song is actually performed by a band and not just the man we see at the beginning. We are then shown Horn again this time though the camera zooms out and we are seen more of the setting and surroundings. We can see the singer has a microphone in which he is singing into. This gives off the feel that the band are performing, when actually the sound is non - digectic and Horn would have been miming.
During the video many bright lights are shown in the background. Although our focus is in the foreground these lights are still visable and the fact they shine in the reflection of Horns sunglasses gives off a feel of new discovery and wonder to the auidence as the music video would have been something new to them. It makes it feel more new and productive. Whilst Horn is singing he is not only surrounded by his band mate and the two ladies but also people we assume are their audience. This 'audience' however don't seem too excited about whats going on around them. They give off the feel that what the band is doing is normal and that the surrounding is something they are used too. This makes me think that at the time the video was shot the audience were purposfully made to look disinterested as they are showing the viewers that what is being shown IS something new and exciting but also not a one off and something they should expect to see a lot of.
The women in this video are backing singers however they are shown sexually to the audience and are not shown in the back looking dowdy. The women are dressed in short dresses of the colours red and white. White represents purity and virginity whilst the red shows passion and lust. I believe this is done purposfully to attract male attention. The lady in the white dress is more covered up then the lady in red, this woman is also brown haired whilst the other is a blonde. This is done intentionally as the sterotype for beautiful women is blonde and skinny. The brunnette lady is not conventionally pretty to society and this is how she is shown in the video. The brunnette also is shorter then the blonde as constantly seems to be looking up at her. This shows superiority within the two girls.
Horn in this video is stood remotely still, he does not make any drastic movements and in fact does not hardly move at all. This fits in with the theme of the video, the space and robotic theme. He also is shown at an angle were he is not looking directly into the camera. However when the lyric 'Put the blame on VCR' is said he looks directly into the camera. This interacts with the audience and gains their attention.
The same graphic is shown throughout the video, although not constantly it is enough to relate it to the video. This graphic would of been something never done before, people would of been amazed by it as it would be something they would have never seen. This video is intertextual and based around themes such as space and new technology. The clothing Horn is dressed in gives off a sense of a robotic theme and the voice and non digectic singing of Horn gives off this theme too. I think audiences in 1979 would have been amazed by this video and suprised it could of actually been made. This also relates with the video as robots and space were once things that did not seem real or could be explored.

Analysis
Horror Trailer SE7EN
SE7EN is a horror film which stars, Brad Pitt, Morgan Freeman, Gwyneth Paltrow, R. Lee Ermey and Kevin Spacey. I have not seen this film so my interpretations of the trailer was based on my own findings.
This horror trailer starts with low deep bass sound which is still audiable when the dialogue begins. This isn't a sound you the would normally associate with horror films as this peice of music is a low sound if you was thinking of music for horror films you would think of a high pitched sound. The first person we see in the film is a character played by Brad Pitt it then goes on to show another major film star Morgan Freeman. This is basically selling the film and showing that its a film with big films stars in.
The lighting in this trailer is quite dark and dingy and this is how we get our first in sight that it's a horror film. We are shown Pitt in a dark room were the tint of the camera is a deep red colour. This gives off the impression of blood and we associate it with horror. It is working within the conventions. There is a lot of flash frames in this trailer, giving you a deeper insight to the film itself as it's showing clips which are in the film. By doing it in flash frame it is making the audience want to see more.
Mysterious imagery is used in this trailer, when flash frames, camera angles were you can't see someones face and dramatic sound is used. This makes the audience wonder what is going to happen next. By doing this the audience will feel curious and want to go and watch the film. By having a track throughout the trailer it gives an eerie impression subtly. However dialogue is used over the tracks and the tracks are used as background sound.
Showing Morgan Freeman in a lot of scenes through out the trailer shows that he is probably the main or second to main character in the film. Showing him in different scenarios shows he will be involved in the film doing a lot of stuff and i get the impression he is a detective. Showing him from a low angled camera gives off a sense of importance and superiority.
As the trailer goes along we are shown different characters in the film and this is introducing them to the audience. The characters in this film are movie stars we all know. By casting well known film stars it could sell the film. Some people may be big fans of the actors in this and may go and see the film just for this purpose only. When we see the character played by Brad Pitt kiss the character played by Gwyneth Paltrow we see that there is a romance within the film. This is a typical convention of all films and gives off the Cinerella narrative for part of the film.
The trailer is shot in dark and dim lighting showing that is a dark film. This shows the horror genre even though it is only lighting. When we see the yellow tape for a crime scene we get a bit more insight to the characters and because of this i believe Pitt's character is a member of the American Police. We also see him kicking open a door, the door is red and the camera is shooting the inside instead of behind Pitt. Because the door is red it stands out giving it more identity then it would if it was black. The red contrasts with the lightening of the film and it makes the door stand out more. As the shot is filmed behind the door instead of behind Pitt we get a feel of what it would be like at that moment in time but we don't put ourselves in Pitt's position as it is not shot from his perspective.
The trailer also has a voice over describing the plot of the film this covers both the dialogue of the film and the non digetic sound. This gives an audience a reality of outside the film and gives them an idea of what the plot of the film is.
Towards the end of the trailer we get an idea on why the film is called SE7EN, this is when Freeman introduces the seven sins. We get the idea that Freeman has discovered this and that the cause of these sins is what caused the crime which we saw earlier on. While he is listing these sins we see the actions of what they have caused. After these shots the camera movements are fast paced and the non digetic music gets faster these shows some action within the film and shows that it is getting intense. When the audience is shown the media publicity shots that the police department are recieving we see how important these crimes are and it makes the plot seem much more exciting and important.
As the trailer gets toward the end we get to see a shot of the antagonist. However he is shown in all black and he is not shown fully. This is showing the mysteriousness of the film and we want to find out he is. When all the seven sins are listed at the end is gives a meaning to the film and we are more likely to remember the sins. We are shown all the characters towards the end and by doing this we are more likely to think of what the effect of the crime has had on them. The voice over begins again at the end and this time he lists the characters real names. This begins to sell the film again because all these names are household names and the majority of the audience will be well aware of these people.

Analysis of a horror film trailer
Click to watch, The Exorcism
The Exorcism is a horror film from the 70's this film was banned from England as it was so scary. Infact people were that scared when watching it that they were fainting and being sick at the cinema. One person even killed themselves after watching this film.
The beginning of the trailer starts in the dark. Non digetic classical music is playing giving it a creepy feel as the tone and pitch of the music is high. The picture remians blank and black for just over 12 seconds. Then we are shown a woman from a low angle and walking with a candle. Because the person is a woman and is shown from a low angle that instantly shows inferiority and vunrabilty.
A voice over then comes onto the trailer whilst the music is still playing faintly in the background. The woman is shown still walking through a creepy looking house when something happens that makes the woman scream and the picture again goes black the voice over has just finished saying 'a world of darkness', this explains to the audience why the scream keeps going black.
The sound we hear next is screaming and then we see a woman running up a staircase. The voice thats screaming is shouting 'Mother' so we instantly know that the girl screaming is the lady who's running up the stairs daughter. The lady running up the staircase is dressed in blue because of the pastel colour it gives a feeling of calm and is not harsh. When the woman reaches the room we are shown the bed voilently shaking and the audience don't get to see what's going on which gives them a feeling of curiousity. There is also another voice which we have not heard before which makes the audience realise there is someone else in the room. The next shot is the mother. The shot is a close up and it stills for around 3 seconds in this time the audience see the shocked look on the mothers face and instantly know that something is wrong. The voice over also says 'No-body expected it'.
The next shots are fast paced and show voilence. We see what we believe is the girl in the bed attack what we assume is a police officer. The police officers are shown in a high angled shot which shows the audience they are superior. The noise shown at these shots of the trailer are screaming and we assume that the terror aspect of the film has gotten worse. The voice over continues to describe the story and he keeps repaeating the word 'It' this shows the audience that the person creating the chaos is something different to what we know.
The next shot is an over the shoulder shot in which we see a man telling someone that 'they're are no experts'. He then goes on to explain how the girl is possessed and needs an exorcism and this gives us and explanation for the title of the film. A white door is then shown and the camera pans towards it. The colour white is usually symbolised with purity and vunralabilty because the girl is 'possesed' it shows contrast between the two. As the camera is still panning the voice of the officer is still talking and then we hear a womans voice. The woman we then find out is the mother if the possesed girl.
Through out the whole trailer we are not shown the face of the girl fully. We get a 1 second close up glance at her face and that is it. Because of this it leaves the audience curious as to what has possesed the girl and the features she has. We are also not shown the face of the man who preforms the excorism. By doing this is leaves him mysterious and leaves the trailer at a cliff hanger.

Quotes.
Because my film trailer will be based around the story of Adam and Eve i wanted to take some quotes out of the Bible to give it a more religious feel. I took out The Bible from the college library and began reading the first Genesis part to get an understanding of the temptation Adam felt when Eve offered him the fruit. The quotes i found will be ones i will use for the base of my storyline to give the audience an understanding of what the trailer is about.
The whole trailer will not be focused on Adam and Eve, the temptation of the story is what i am focusing on and this is what will cause what happens in the trailer. The quotes i have chosen are
‘Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil’.
‘She gave me of the tree, and I did eat’.
These quotes i feel, give a good understanding to temptation.
the first quote explores how a man will know good AND evil and the second quote shows how he was tempted by Eve the woman.

Possible, locations, cast and props
Possible Locations.
Church, Garage, Woods, Prison, Graveyard.
These are my possible locations as i want my trailer to have an eerie and relgious theme about it. Although a prison is not necisserily religous it fits in with the ideo and narrative for my trailer.
Cast,
Mike Davies – Protagonist.
Sophie Carter - Victim
I will be using these people for my trailer because i think they cast well. I am not just choosing them because they are my boyfriend and friend i am choosing them because of their experience and their ability. Both cast members are close to me this means filming will not be awkward and there will be a lot more time for seriousness and proper shooting.
Mike has appaered in another students work from last year and has also produced his own films which he has starred in. I want him to be my protagonist as he plays well in any role he is given and is not one to mess about when things are supposed to be serious. I can also dress him to play the part and he will look exactly how i want him too and not look out of place.
I have chosen Sophie to be my victim as she scored a C at AS drama and goes to an acting academy. I feel she will fit the role well and we have already spoken about ideas and she has been enthusiastic about being in my work.
Both cast have had practises and run throughs all ready and i have no worries about them being the cast for my coursework.
Props – Bible, Rosary, Cross
These are the props i have got at the moment. These fit in with the religious theme of my trailer and are easy symbols for people to recognise.

Conventions of a horror film.
Horror films are unsettling movies that strive to elicit the emotions of fear, disgust and horror from viewers. They often feature scenes that startle the viewer through the means of macabre and the supernatural, thus frequently overlapping with the fantasy and science fiction genres. Horrors also frequently overlap with the thriller genre.
Horror films deal with the viewer's nightmares, hidden worst fears, revulsions and terror of the unknown. Although a good deal of it is about the supernatural, if some films contain a plot about morbidity, serial killers, a disease/virus outbreak and surrealism, they may be termed "horror".
Plots written within the horror genre often involve the intrusion of an evil force, event, or personage, commonly of supernatural origin, into the everyday world. Themes or elements often prevelant in typical horror films include ghosts, torture, gore, werewolves, ancient curses, satanism, demons, vicious animals, vampires, cannibals, haunted houses, zombies and masked serial killers. Conversely, stories of the supernatural are not neccesarily always a horror movie as well.

LIIAR
Language - I will be using hardly any dialouge in my film trailer. The trailer will include music throughout with only a tiny bit of dialouge shown. Because the genre of my trailer is horror the terms in it will be relevant to horror.
Institution - I am working independently. I know this is a lot harder than working in a group but for me it will be benificial to my finished product. Although funding and far away locations are not accessable i will use the sources i have to my advantage. I find if i work on my own i can work a lot better than in a group. Working individually means my work will be fully mine, i can choose what i want to do and if anything goes wrong i am held responsible. Working independently works better for me as i will have no problem with arguing over cast, locations, props ect...
Ideology - I want my audience to feel tension when they watch the trailer or even scared. The things i use to do this would be black colour imagery, mysterious use of camera angles so they cannot see my protagonists face and very little dialougue. I will use the typical stereotypes for Horror genre.
Audience - As i have already stated my film will be aimed at an audience of students and above. I will grade the certificate of my film an 18. This will suit my target audience. I feel that because my trailer is for a horror film the certificate and target audience suits with the genre of my film. I obviously will not want the film to be aimed at young children when it will be of a scary nature.
Representation - The representation of my protagonist will be someone to be scared of, i do not want my audience to feel sorry for him or to like him as a character. I will portray my protagonist in a way in which people will be wary of him EG, dressing him in dark colours, showing him in the darkness, and not showing his face properly. My victim on the other hand is someone i want the audience to feel sympathy for. I will show her in a distressed way with no sense of power which the protagonist has. I will show her tied up to show vunrability.

Idea's for film trailer
On March 5th 2002 14 Year Old Robert Cooper was held in a young offenders prison for the murder and sexual assault of a teenage girl.
Bible passages were read to the victim whilst torturing her to death.
What shocked the public most was how normal this boy seemed to be.
8 years later he’s out!
What will he do next?
OR
Because Eve tempted Adam
Women will pay.
This trailer will be based on the story of Adam and Eve.
The protagonist will be seen in a church to begin with and text across the screen will be shown to explain the story.
The protagonist will be shown attacking the victim in the woods.
The trailer i am chosing to do is the second option. This option seems a better idea than the first i feel i can make this trailer and film it a lot better than to first idea.
